Consequences of Avoiding Reality

The quote that I have chosen is a quote by Ayn Rand that states, "You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality." To me this quote means that no matter how much you try to avoid your surroundings, you may still have consequences. In our society, there are many people who try to avoid what is occurring around the world. It is easy for people to turn their heads and try to disregard what is going on around them. Although they think they are shielding themselves from facing reality, they may still have consequences to pay. For example, consider the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Many American citizens thought we would go and fight these wars, win easily, and be back in no time. To this day, we are still fighting wars that we thought would be simple victories. These wars have cost us billions of dollars and the lives of many brave Americans. When a crisis is going on in another country, people like to pretend that nothing is happening because they do not personally experience any consequences. However, the end result may be higher taxes or an increase in the prices of goods. I think this quote is important, because it reminds people that even though they are ignoring what is going on around them, they are still subject to the events that are occurring in their surroundings.
