The Butterfly
Effect
Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect? The butterfly effect, as defined by google, is the “sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.” At its most basic form that is saying that something small like throwing a piece of thrash in the street could lead to a special chain of events that could cause a vehicle accident. The quote, “That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind,’’ reminded me of the butterfly effect exactly.
In the story, it talks about looking at one story from two different angles. The Five People You Meet in Heaven starts off with Eddie and his friends throwing a baseball he had just gotten for his seventh birthday. When you look at it from the point of view of Eddie all you see is a little boy who ran into the street to retrieve a ball, but when you look at it from the point of view of the, “Blue man,” you see a man borrowing a friend’s car and having to swerve out of the way to not hit a boy who ran into the street to retrieve a lost ball. Also, it just so happened that the, “Blue man” has a weak heart and that event caused him to have a heart attack.
The quote from the story reminds me of the butterfly effect because,”…you con more separate on life from another that you can separate a breeze from the wind.” Is the butterfly effect.
