We are all connected

In the story, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Eddie dies and meets a blue man in Heaven named Joseph Corvelzchik. The Blue Man gives Eddie a lesson and one of the things that he tells him is “That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can a breeze from the wind.’’

At first, I didn’t know what this quote meant, but if you break it down, it starts to make sense. The quote begins with the statement ‘’That there are no random acts.’’ What this means is that everything happens for a reason and our lives are already planned out ahead of time. For example, when Eddie ran into the road to chase after the basketball , it wasn’t  luck that the Blue Man swerved out of the way, it was supposed to happen. As a result of Eddie running into the road, the Blue Man also died. Sometimes, when bad things happen we don’t know why. All we know is that they happen for some reason.

The second sentence in the quote says ‘’ That we are all connected.’’ This means that everything we do has an impact on the people around us. The things that we do in our lives occur because of a chain reaction. When someone does something, we will have a reaction , whether it is good or bad, and our reaction will cause someone else to have a reaction, and so on. For example, in the story Eddie meets a woman names Ruby. She built the pier that Eddie and his father grew up on, worked on, and where Eddie died. Without her, none of those things would have happened. Even though Eddie did not personally know Ruby, she still impacted his life.

The last sentence in this quote says ‘’That you can no more separate one  life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind. ‘’ This statement means that just like you cannot separate the connection between a breeze and the wind, you cannot separate the connection between people. It also means that you cannot prevent things from happening that are supposed to happen to you.

This quote made me think that next time I have to make a decision, I should think twice before making it, even if it is something small. I should think about who it could have an impact on , and how it would affect them.  This is because even the smallest decisions can have the biggest impacts on people. Therefore, somehow we are all connected and the choices that we make every day impact someone in some way.
