Musical Hero

What does it take to be a hero? Heroes are typically strong, brave, and clever. Many people imagine strong and brave warriors from legends, such as Odysseus, or the more modern superheroes found in comic books. People also think of everyday heroes like firefighters and doctors. There are many other heroes in our everyday life, and one of the first things to come to my mind are band directors. A band director exhibits many heroic traits such as intelligence, patience, and loyalty. They are very educated in music; they can play all the instruments in the band and are happy to help students individually. They are patient and spend hours making the band better, even when some students do not try their best. They are also loyal, and stick with their band no matter how successful the group is. For many, this makes band like a second family. Throughout a career as a band director, many challenges are faced and times aren’t always pleasant. It can be very hard to motivate high schoolers to become better musicians. They also have to be a bit brave to deal with some of the sounds they hear everyday. I definitely consider band directors to be an example of an everyday hero.

  1. This is absolutely correct. We see this everyday in our band ;)

  2. Band all the way! But really? I really do like it, though. I am certain that if I cut open a strand of your DNA, I'd find a staff with a bunch of sixteenth notes four feet above the measure on it!!

  3. I agree with all of what you say. Our band directors have so much patience with us and are more than willing to help us when we need it. Thanks for giving them the credit they deserve!
