Actions, Fate, & Impact
The decisions that you make
throughout your life can affect others, even if you do not know it at the time.
Our lives are all connected because of
our actions. For example, when Eddie
thought he was just going to get a baseball out of the street, he had no idea
that this event would lead to the death of the Blue Man. In The Five People
You Meet in Heaven, the book states, “Take one story, viewed from two
different angles. It is the same day, the same moment, but one angle ends up
happily, at an arcade, with the little boy in tawny pants dropping pennies into
the Erie Digger machine, and the other ends badly, in a city morgue, where one
worker calls another worker over to marvel at the blue skin of the newest
arrival.”
When Eddie meets the Captain in heaven, he learns that the Captain shot him in the leg. The Captain tries to explain by stating, "I took your leg to save your life." The Captain may have saved Eddie's life by stopping him from going into the fire. However, his actions lead to the death of Tala, the little girl Eddie tried to save in the burning hut. Eddie never knew that the gunshot that permanently injured his leg was fired by the Captain.
A decision Eddie made that affected others was his decision to go gambling at the racetrack after Marguerite, his wife, told him to come home. On her way to apologize and reason with Eddie after their conversation on the phone, Marguerite gets in a terrible car accident caused by teenage boys. This causes Marguerite to be on bed rest for six months, and the expense and the delay cost them the child they were going to adopt.
Everybody’s life is connected to another because their actions impact the lives around them. For example, Eddie’s life was impacted by the little girl below the ride and Nicky who lost the key because those are the two people who caused some of the events that led to his death. You can no more separate a breeze from the wind from one life to another because they all act together. The breeze and the wind work together just like people impact others in the world. In conclusion, everybody impacts another person somewhere in the world, no matter if you make a small impact or a huge impact on their life.
