Every day you encounter a human being in your life. Whether it is a stranger you smiled to at the store or giving your mom a hug, you have some type of contact with another living being. All contact that you make with people is not random. You may think it is a coincidence but it is a connection between you and that person, even if they are a stranger. The quote, "That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind," Shows us that this is accurate.
Whenever you feel the urge to smile at a stranger, do you ever wonder why you did it? Maybe you were trying to be nice or maybe you simply wanted to show off your teeth. You didn't think much about that random smile but it set off a chain reaction for that persons day. That one little move of your muscles made the other person smile, which then could have caused them to smile at someone else and the cycle repeats. That random act was connected to that person. As you learn in The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Eddie ran out into the street to get his runaway ball. Because Eddie did this, a character in the book lost his life. That simple act made, caused so much trouble and connected two human beings together. You cannot separate the act because it caused more acts. It was meant to happen, it was meant to be free. The quote above tells us that the most random acts aren't random. They are not coincidental; they are part of a domino effect that triggers a never ending reaction.
Reading this quote instantly reminds me of relationships. Meeting new people causes new relationships to form. From the first introduction of yourself to that person you become connected. You might call your new friend every once in a while to check up on them. Whenever you see something that they post on social media, you like it or comment a witty sentence or two. Because of doing this, your connections grow. The two of you are becoming more difficult to separate. You are becoming connected like roots in soil. The longer you know each other the stronger your relationship grows and you find yourselves having a hard time pulling away. When Eddie meets his true love in The Five People You Meet in Heaven, he becomes instantly attached to the girl. It is as though a rope was tied in a knot around them and it refused to be untangled by the world. Maybe it was fate that they were supposed to meet but it wasn't a coincidence.
Free will is your choice of choosing or doing something. You have the free will to talk to who you want and hangout with who you want. When you look at this quote you might think you have the choice of choosing when to separate yourself from someone and you do. You also have the choice of making the actions that you do. But even if you separate yourself from another person, you still will be connected even if you don't want to be. Hearing a song on the radio or thinking of an inside joke can trigger that connection. There will always be something reminding you of what you used to share with another person. Going to Ruby Pier everyday, reminded Eddie of the connection he had with his dad in The Five People You Meet in Heaven. He didn't necessarily want this connection and he chose to try and break it. Because of the path Eddie's life went down, he was constantly reminded of the choice he made and the outcome of it all. He made that action because he chose to but also because he was meant to.
When you observe the people around you, you will see little acts of interaction between them. You will see them smiling, talking, arguing, etcetera. These actions are the normal everyday things that human beings do. But behind those acts of individuals, there are connections. Connections that bring these individual beings together. There is no randomness, only beings fighting against separation. There is choice intertwined into those everyday things. ''That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind." This is a way to think of how the world works. Everyone is surrounded by connections that can't be severed. Acts that were meant to flood through each of us and not just around us. Choices that are not coincidental and are determined to shape us.
