By simply breathing, we affect
people. There is no such thing as a random act. If someone decides to step away
from routine by not walking there dog at a certain time, they could risk not
meeting the person they are supposed to marry, or their life could have been
saved from being hit by a car that ran a red light. Our lives are just little
strands that God has woven into a beautiful tapestry. Each strand is connected
and it is impossible to disconnect them. In the novel The Five People You
Meet in Heaven the main character, Eddie, is killed in an accident at his
job. While in heaven, the blue man from his childhood tells him, “That there
are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate
one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind.” While
saying this, the blue man is trying to get Eddie, and readers, to realize that
God has a plan for each and every person that has ever lived and ever will
live.
This quote has made me, as a reader, realize
how thoroughly God has planned out our lives. Many others may be coming to this
conclusion or a similar one. When the Blue Man compered the task of separating
lives to separating breezes from the wind, it clicked for me. I am a Christian,
and I have always heard people say that God has a plan for us. The thought that
the plan was intertwined with other’s never occurred to me. Eddie’s plan
included the Blue Man dying, but, if the Blue Man had not swerved the car and
died, Eddie would have died instead. My plan may involve a car crash or saving
someone’s life; no one but God knows. It is not for any of us to know how and
when things will happen. However, it is our job to take life as it comes and
deal with the distractions and troubles one at a time.
