The quote “That there are no random
acts. That we are all connected. That
you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze
from the wind,” is a very profound statement.
When the Blue man held out his hand and said, “Fairness does not govern
life and death. If it did, no good
person would ever die young.” instantly reminded me of my family. I have heard great stories about my
grandfather, but I have never had the opportunity to meet him because he passed
away when my mother was only sixteen years old.
Several of my great aunts and uncle also passed at an early age and they
were not horrible people. In fact, they
were very loving people who cherished their family. The statement allowed me to better understand
death and that no one can escape it. The death of my grandfather caused my
mother to attend Southern University instead of Grambling University. Had my mother attended Grambling University
instead of Southern University, she wouldn’t have met my father and I would not
exist. My grandfather’s death affected my mother’s decision as to where she
would attend college.
The death of a family member can also bring
families closer because they suddenly realize that life is uncertain. Our great uncle to pass in March, he died of cancer
and his wife never really communicate with our family. As a result of his
death, she begin to communicate with us and attend family events. Holidays and family reunions become important to everyone
because you don’t know if and when you will see your love ones again. Our
family reunion was in June and my uncle absence was a constant reminder of how life is again uncertain. You can’t escape what is destined to happened,
but you can control how you react to events in life. You can learn from it and make an effort to be
a better person or you can use it as an excuse to make bad decisions. Whatever
choice you make is a reaction to an event that ultimately had an effect on your
life.
